Rhinestone Cowboy Glen Campbell rides off into the sunset

Country and Western artist Glen Campbell has passed away.

The singer-songwriter, who was born in Arkansas, sold over 45m records over the course of a career that spanned more than 60 years. A statement from the Campbell family on his website read: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and legendary singer and guitarist, Glen Travis Campbell, at the age of 81, following his long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.”

From 1969 to 1972, Glen Campbell was the host of the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour on CBS, a music and comedy variety show that aired 91 episodes. Among his 80 songs that charted on the Billboard Hot 100 or Billboard Country charts were hits such as Rhinestone Cowboy, By the Time I Get to Phoenix and his cover of Gentle on My Mind.

Glen Campbell recorded his final studio album, Adios, in Nashville in 2012 and 2013 after his Alzheimer’s diagnosis; it was released in June this year. The seventh of 12 kids, Campbell dropped out of school when he was 14, moving first to Wyoming and then to Los Angeles, where in the early 60s he appeared on the records of Elvis Presley, Merle Haggard and the Byrds. His first hit came in 1967 with By the Time I Get to Phoenix, written by Jim Webb. They would go on to collaborate on numerous records such as Wichita Lineman and the ballad Galveston.

He was also nominated for an Oscar in 2015 for a song from his documentary Glen Campbell: “Be Me.”

Dolly Parton paid tribute, saying: “Well Glen Campbell was special because he was so gifted. Glen is one of the greatest voices there ever was in the business. And he was one of the greatest musicians. He was a wonderful session musician as well, a lot of people don’t realize that. But he could play anything and he could play it really well. So he was just extremely talented.”

Saturday Night Fever was a better disco jukebox than movie

Is it really 40 years since Saturday Night Fever was released on an unsuspecting movie theater audience?

I say unsuspecting because Saturday Night Fever introduced  a mass audience to the phenomenon of disco and John Travolta ( making his Hollywood debut ). As the movie opened to Tony Manero aka John Travolta strutting down a sidewalk in New York carrying a pot of paint, there was little to suggest that John Travolta would paint the “Big Apple” red on the dance floors of New York night spots. In fairness he looked more like a lothario than a “DIY Dad”, but nevertheless nothing prepared us for his moves on the dancefloor!!

Nor was there any hint that Saturday Night Fever would become a cultural and music phenomenon that would ingratiate it’s way into the hearts and souls of my generation and generations to come. The movie plot / storyline is thin at best but where the movie excelled was in John Travolta’s dancing and athleticism, but most of all the musical score / soundtrack, spearheaded by the Bee Gees.

So let’s celebrate the 40th anniversary of Saturday Night Fever, with this top 5 best songs from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack –

Top 5 Best Songs from Saturday Night Fever

1) Bee Gees – Stayin’ Alive

2) Bee Gees – How deep is your love

3) Trammps – Disco Inferno

4) Yvonne Elliman – If I can’t have you

5) Tavares – More than a woman

Chris Cornell, former Soundgarden singer, dies aged 52

Chris Cornell, former lead singer of Soundgarden and later Audioslave, has died aged 52.

Chris Cornell had been touring with Soundgarden, and was tweeting upbeat messages about a sold out concert in Detroit just hours before his death. Soundgarden were part of the Pacific northwestern grunge scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s, coming up alongside Nirvana. Like Nirvana, they were first signed to indie label Sub Pop before graduating to a major label, taking their heavy, angst-ridden sound into the mainstream with singles like Black Hole Sun.

Soundgarden sold over 10m albums in the US alone, and were nominated for nine Grammy awards, winning two. They broke up in 1997, but reformed in 2010; their most recent album was King Animal in 2012, and had been working on new songs over the past year.

Following the breakup of Soundgarden, Chris Cornell recorded a solo record, before being recruited as the singer for Rick Rubin-produced rock supergroup Audioslave, which also featured former members of Rage Against the Machine. Featuring a glossy yet robust update of the bands’ 1990s sound, their 2002 debut album was a big success, eventually going triple platinum in the US.

In truth the Record Press author was  never real grunge fan, so my introduction to Chris Cornell was his song You Know My Name which became the theme for the 2006 James Bond movie Casino Royale. Ironically I didn’t know his name until the release of that song!!…….

Ed Sheeran settles $20m lawsuit for the song Photograph

Ed Sheeran has settled a $20m plagiarism lawsuit for the song Photograph.

Ed Sheeran was accused of copying “note-for-note” from a song called Amazing, released by Matt Cardle five years ago. Songwriters Thomas Leonard and Martin Harrington sued Ed Sheeran, accusing him of “unabashedly taking credit” for their work. The songwriters claimed the chorus of Photograph and Amazing shared 39 identical notes and that the similarities were “instantly recognisable to the ordinary observer”.

“This copying is, in many instances, verbatim, note-for-note copying, [and] makes up nearly one half of Photograph,” they said in a complaint lodged in the US in July.

Photograph, released from Ed Sheeran’s album X reached No 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Its video has more than 300m views on YouTube.

An order signed by Judge James Selna at a California court on Monday said the case had been dismissed after an undisclosed agreement had been reached between the parties.

It is the second plagiarism lawsuit taken out against Ed Sheeran in recent months, with an another ongoing case accusing him of plagiarising the melody, harmony and composition of Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get it On in his track Thinking Out Loud.

Chuck Berry, pioneer rock’n’roll guitarist, dies at age of 90

Chuck Berry, the guitarist and songwriter widely regarded as one of the fathers of rock ‘n’ roll, has died aged 90.

Chuck Berry’s seven-decade career boasted a string of hits, including classics Roll Over Beethoven and Johnny B. Goode. He received a lifetime achievement Grammy in 1984 and was among the first inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.

The death of Chuck Berry was confirmed by police in the state of Missouri. The singer was found unresponsive at 12:40 local time (17:40 GMT) on Saturday, St Charles County police said in a statement. He could not be revived and was pronounced dead at 13:26. The statement read: “The St. Charles County Police Department sadly confirms the death of Charles Edward Anderson Berry Sr., better known as legendary musician Chuck Berry.”

High-profile musicians thronged to pay tribute to Chuck Berry’s talent and influence. Motown legends The Jacksons tweeted: “Chuck Berry merged blues & swing into the phenomenon of early rock’n’roll. In music, he cast one of the longest shadows. Thank You Chuck.”

Singer-songwriter Huey Lewis described him as “maybe the most important figure in all of rock and roll. His music and influence will last forever.”

Beatles drummer Ringo Starr quoted one of Chuck Berry’s own lyrics on Twitter, saying: “Just let me hear some of that rock ‘n’ roll music any old way you use it. I am playing I’m talking about you.”

Both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones covered Berry’s songs, as did The Beach Boys and Elvis. “If you tried to give rock ‘n’ roll another name,” John Lennon once said, “you might call it ‘Chuck Berry’.” Meanwhile Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones said that Chuck Berry “lit up our teenage years and blew life into our dreams”. Bruce Springsteen described him simply as “a giant for the ages”.

Chuck Berry was born in St Louis, Missouri, in 1926, and had his first hit, Maybellene, in 1955. He went on to have a succession of hits that were aimed at adolescent audiences, transcending the colour discrimination that affected many contemporary black artists.

Last year, Chuck Berry announced he would be releasing his first album in nearly four decades. He dedicated it to his wife of 68 years, Themetta “Toddy”.

The album, titled Chuck, was recorded in St Louis, Missouri. It will be released later this year, though a date has not been set.

Lady Gaga to replace Beyoncé at Coachella festival

Lady Gaga will replace Beyoncé as a headline act at the 2017 Coachella festival.

Lady Gaga is only the second female headliner at the Coachella festival, following Björk, who headlined twice – in 2002 and 2007. Lady Gaga, who appeared at the Super Bowl half time show recently, will join Radiohead and Kendrick Lamar as one of the headliners at the Californian music festival this April.

Lady Gaga replaces Beyoncé, who is pregnant with twins. In a recent statement, it was announced that: “Following the advice of her doctors to keep a less rigorous schedule in the coming months, Beyoncé has made the decision to forgo performing at the 2017 Coachella Valley music and arts festival.”

Lady Gaga announced her Saturday night set on 1 March via Twitter with the statement: “Let’s party in the desert!”. Other artists joining her in the Californian desert include Lorde, Bon Iver, the xx, Father John Misty, Justice and New Order. Coachella takes place over two weeks at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, in mid-April.

Beyoncé pulls out of Coachella festival on medical advice

Beyoncé has withdrawn from headlining the Coachella music festival in April, after she was advised to pull out of the gig by her medical team.

Beyoncé was due to headline the Saturday night show of the 18th annual Coachella festival, which takes place over two weeks at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, in mid-April.

Beyoncé’s doctors suggested she needed to “keep a less rigorous schedule”, according to a joint statement released to the Associated Press by her management team, Parkwood, and Goldenvoice, the promotion team behind the festival: “Following the advice of her doctors to keep a less rigorous schedule in the coming months, Beyoncé has made the decision to forgo performing at the 2017 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. However, Goldenvoice and Parkwood are pleased to confirm that she will be a headliner at the 2018 festival. Thank you for your understanding.”

Jay Z ecstatic to be first rapper in Songwriters Hall of Fame

Jay Z has expressed his delight at becoming the first rapper to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Jay Z announced: “This is a win for us. I remember when rap was said to be a fad. We are now alongside some of the greatest writers in history.”

Jay Z’s Songwriters Hall of Fame induction, which will take place at a ceremony in New York in June, was announced on US TV on Wednesday by Nile Rodgers of Chic. Nile Rodgers suggested that it had taken so long to induct Jay Z because, “even though he’s had more pop albums than anyone else … he did it through rap”.

Nile Rodgers added that the Jay Z induction was “massive. He has changed the way that we listen to music. He’s changed the way that we have fun.”

Jay Z is in good company as fellow Songwriters Hall of Fame inductees for 2017 are Max Martin, the Swedish songwriter and super-producer who has dominated worldwide pop charts for 20 years, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Berry Gordy, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and three members of Chicago – Robert Lamm, James Pankow and Peter Cetera.

In an interview with the New York Times, Songwriters Hall of Fame president Linda Moran noted it had been a struggle to get Jay Z inducted, explaining: “To be honest with you, last year we talked about it a lot. Our board and community wasn’t ready. This year we felt that they had been educated enough.” She added that Jay Z was “so over the moon” about the induction. She added: “He was flipping out, he was going crazy.”

Adele beats Beyoncé to top awards at Grammys 2017

Adele somewhat reluctantly accepted the top accolades after beating Beyoncé’s Lemonade to best album, song and record of the year at the Grammys 2017 show.

Adele’s wins at the 59th annual Grammy awards in Los Angeles came after Adele repeatedly apologized fro screwing up her tribute to George Michael during the show. She nearly apologized again after receiving the album of the year for 25.

Adele continued by speaking directly to Beyoncé, who was in the audience: “All us artists here adore you. You are our light. And the way that you make me and my friends feel, the way you make my black friends feel, is empowering. And you make them stand up for themselves. And I love you. I always have and I always will.”

Adele cleared the board, taking all five of the awards she was nominated for. Beyoncé was nominated nine times to Adele’s five, but the British singer took home the night’s top awards: album of the year for 25, and record of the year for Hello.

While accepting record of the year, Adele continued to eulogize about Beyoncé, saying: “You move my soul every single day, and you have done, for the last 17 years”.

Adele kicked off the Grammys show with her winning track and later performed a tribute to George Michael, but abruptly stopped a slowed-down arrangement of Michael’s Fastlove after singing off-key. She cursed before restarting the track, adding: “I’m sorry for swearing and I’m sorry for starting again. I can’t mess this up for him. I’m sorry, I can’t.” Adele then completed a ballad-version of the George Michael standard, tears cascading down her face as she received a standing ovation.

The tributes continued, when seven singers gathered on stage in spangly 1970s disco-era outfits and era for a medley tribute to the Bee Gees.

And The Time delivered a rousing tribute to their contemporary, Prince before Bruno Mars performed Let’s Go Crazy.
